As a fellow at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Art + Tech Lab, Julia Christensen began photographing obsolete ephemera in the LACMA archives. She took a selection of the ephemera to the Media Archaeology Lab at the University of Colorado in Boulder to upgrade the lost artifacts into a more contemporary format. In some cases the upgrade was partially successful; in many cases it was not. What is the impact of upgrade culture on institutions meant to preserve a running cultural narrative, over the course of institutions? This work is part of Christensen’s long-running project, Upgrade Available, investigating how upgrade culture impacts our experience of time, on many scales; photographs from Archived Obsolescence are featured in her book, Upgrade Available.
